Freckles,
those tan or brown spots on the skin, are small areas of increased skin pigment
or melanin. There is a genetic tendency to develop freckles, and parents with
freckles often pass this trait down to their children. Freckles usually occur
on the face, arms, and other parts of the body that are exposed to the sun.
Freckles themselves pose no health risks, but individuals who freckle easily
are at an increased risk for skin cancer.
