The skeletal system has both mechanical and physiological
functions. Mechanical functions include support, protection, and movement. The
bones of the skeletal system provide the rigid framework that supports the
body. Bones also protect internal organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, and
organs in the pelvic area. Muscles are anchored to bones and act as levers at
the joints, allowing for movement. Physiological functions of the skeletal
system include the production of blood cells and the supplying and storing of
important minerals.
