Remodeling
is the ongoing replacement of old bone tissue by new bone tissue. In order to
maintain homeostasis, bone must be replaced or renewed through the selective
resorption of old bone and the simultaneous production of new bone.
Approximately 5 to 10 percent of the skeleton is remodeled each year. Thus,
every seven years the body grows the equivalent of an entirely new skeleton
through remodeling.
