The two types of sweat glands, also called sudoriferous glands,
are eccrine and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands, which are found all over the
body and are far more numerous, produce sweat. Sweat is a clear secretion that
is largely comprised of water, some salts such as sodium chloride, urea and
uric acid (metabolic wastes), and vitamin C. Apocrine sweat glands are found
primarily in the axillary (armpit) and genital areas of the body and usually
connect to hair follicles. These sweat glands become active when a person is
emotionally upset, frightened, or in pain.
