The
sternum is a flat, narrow bone located in the center of the anterior chest
wall. It consists of three parts: manubrium, the body, and the xiphoid process.
The manubrium is the upper part and it articulates with the clavicle and first
two ribs. The body of the sternum is the largest part of the sternum. It
articulates with the second through tenth pairs of ribs. The xiphoid process is
the smallest, thinnest, and lowest part of the sternum. Although it does not
articulate with any ribs or costal cartilages, several ligaments and muscles
are attached to it.
