What are the functions of the paranasal sinuses?

There are four pairs of paranasal sinuses in the bones of the skull located near the nasal cavity. They are lined with mucus. One of their important functions is to act as resonating chambers to produce unique voice sounds. Since they are air-filled, they lighten the weight of the skull bones.
