What is the function of the pectoral girdle?

The pectoral (or shoulder) girdle consists of two bones: the clavicle and scapula. The clavicle articulates with the manubrium of the sternum, providing the only direct connection between the pectoral girdle and the axial skeleton. There is no connection to the vertebral column, allowing for a wide range of movement of the
shoulder girdle.
