What are the characteristics of long bones?

The length of a long bone is greater than its width. These bones act as levers that are pulled by contracting muscles. The lever action makes it possible for the body to move. Examples of long bones are the femur (thighbone) and humerus (upper arm bone). Some long bones, such as certain bones in the fingers and toes, are relatively short, but their overall length is still greater than their width.
