What are the functions of the vertebral column?

The vertebral column, known also as the spine or backbone, encloses and protects the spinal cord, supports the head, and serves as a point of attachment for the ribs and the muscles of the back. The vertebral column also provides support for the weight of the body, permits movement, and helps the body maintain an erect position.
