Do all stratified squamous epithelial cells become keratinized?




The nuclei and organelles of stratified squamous cells in a moist environment such as the mouth, esophagus, vagina, and cornea do not break down even as the cells reach the superficial layer. This tissue is known as nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
