What is the “ABCD” rule for recognizing trouble signs in a mole or cutaneous melanomas?

ABCD refers to:
“A” is for asymmetry—the two sides of the growth or mole do not match.
“B” is for border irregularity—the border or outline of the growth is not smooth but shows indentations.
“C” is for color—the pigmented growth contains areas of different colors such as blacks, browns, tans, grays, blues, and reds.
“D” is for diameter—the growth is larger than about 0.25 inches (6.35 millimeters) in diameter, or larger than a pencil eraser.
