Cartilage
does not contain blood vessels. Oxygen, nutrients, and cellular wastes diffuse
through the selectively permeable matrix. Cartilage transplants are successful
because foreign proteins in the transplanted cells do not have a way to enter
the host body’s circulation and cause an immune response. However, since there
are no blood vessels in cartilage, the healing process is slower than for other
tissues.
