What is the basement membrane?

The basement membrane is a thin layer composed of tiny fibers and nonliving polysaccharide material produced by epithelial cells. It anchors the epithelial tissue to the underlying connective tissue. The basement membrane provides elastic support and acts as a partial barrier for diffusion and filtration.
