What is an advantage of positron emission tomography (PET imaging) over CT scans and X-rays?

Unlike traditional X-rays and CT scans, which reveal information about the structure of internal organs, positron emission tomography (PET imaging) is an excellent technique for observing metabolic processes. Developed during the 1970s, PET imaging uses radioactive isotopes to detect biochemical activity in a specific body part.
