What conditions result from the build-up of fluids in the ventral body cavity?

An abnormal build-up of fluids in the ventral body cavity may be caused by infection or chronic irritation. Each type of serous membrane may be affected by inflammation and infection. Pleurisy is an inflammation of the pleural cavity; pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium; and peritonitis is an inflammation of the
peritoneum.
